We have collected answers to the questions patients ask us most often. If you cannot find your answer, call or write to us — the contact details are at the bottom of this page.
Appointments
How do I book an MRI, X-ray or ultrasound examination?
The easiest way is the online booking form — we process your booking, call you back and confirm the exact appointment time. You can also book by telephone on 02 23 53 552 or 02 23 53 553 (every working day between 8:00 and 20:00), by email at mr@mdt.si, in person or by post at MDT&T d.o.o., Lavričeva ulica 1, 2000 Maribor.
Booking is also possible through the national e-booking portals zVEM and NIJZ.
What information do I need for an online booking, and what happens after I submit it?
In the online form you choose the examination type and your preferred approximate time (morning, afternoon, weekday or weekend), and enter your full name, the 13-digit e-referral number, your 9-digit ZZZS health insurance number, address, telephone and email (for self-pay bookings no referral or ZZZS number is needed). For MRI and thyroid examinations you can also fill in the pre-examination questionnaire in the next step — check-in will be faster.
After you submit the booking, we call you on the number provided and confirm the exact appointment time — there is no need to call us to confirm. For urgent cases, call 02 23 53 552.
How do I book an appointment at the Thyroid Clinic? Is it the same phone number as radiology?
No — the Thyroid Clinic has its own telephone number 02 23 53 555 and email scitnica@mdt.si. The numbers 02 23 53 552 and 02 23 53 553 and mr@mdt.si are for MRI, X-ray and ultrasound only.
Telephone booking for the Thyroid Clinic is available on Mondays and Tuesdays between 11:30 and 15:30, and Wednesday to Friday between 7:00 and 11:00. In-person booking: Mondays and Tuesdays 12:00–19:00, Wednesday to Friday 7:00–14:00. You can also use the online booking form (choose the thyroid examination).
What should I do if I cannot attend my appointment?
Please let us know in good time — this is also a patient's duty under the Patients' Rights Act. It allows us to offer the slot to another patient and find you a new one sooner.
For radiology examinations (MRI, X-ray, US) call 02 23 53 552 or 02 23 53 553 (working days 8:00–20:00) or write to mr@mdt.si. For the Thyroid Clinic call 02 23 53 555 or write to scitnica@mdt.si.
Preparing for an examination
Do I need to fast before the examination?
It depends on the examination. For MRI of the upper abdomen, MRI of the pelvis, MR urography and breast MRI, fast for at least 6 hours; for MR enterography 8 hours (no liquids for the last 4 hours). For MRI of the head, spine or chest you only need to fast (at least 6 hours) if contrast agent is planned; for MRA of the abdominal vessels fast 6–8 hours.
No special preparation is needed for MRI of joints and limbs, X-ray imaging or ultrasound-guided procedures. For abdominal ultrasound, fast for about 6 hours; for urinary tract ultrasound, drink 0.5 to 1 litre of water an hour before your appointment. Detailed instructions are with each examination on the MRI and Ultrasound pages.
I have a pacemaker or a metal implant — can I have an MRI?
For safety reasons we do not perform MRI examinations on patients with an implanted pacemaker or defibrillator. If you have other metal foreign bodies or other implants, obtain a certificate or your physician's opinion on the implant's MRI compatibility before the examination.
Before entering the examination room, remove all removable metal objects — jewellery, watch, hairpins, hearing aid, phone and cards with a magnetic strip — and wear clothing without metal buttons, clasps or zips.
What should I bring with me to the examination or consultation?
Before an MRI examination, fill in the general MRI questionnaire (for breast MRI also the breast MRI questionnaire) and bring it with you — check-in will be faster.
For your first visit to the Thyroid Clinic, bring the completed pre-first-visit questionnaire, previous thyroid examination results, your outpatient record, recent laboratory results, scintigraphy results and a list of your regular medication. You do not need to fast for thyroid blood tests and may take your regular medication.
Will I receive a contrast agent during the MRI, and what should I tell the staff?
Contrast agent is given on the radiologist's instruction as an intravenous injection (only in MR arthrography it is injected into the examined joint); for some examinations, such as breast MRI and prostate MRI, it is mandatory. A feeling of cold during the injection is normal, a small bruise is possible, and allergic reactions are very rare.
Before your examination, be sure to tell us about any known allergy to contrast agent, kidney disease, pregnancy or claustrophobia — before you enter the examination room.
Schedules & waiting times
What are the waiting times and what do they depend on?
The waiting time depends on the urgency level on your referral: regular, fast or very fast. With an "urgent" referral we perform X-ray imaging within 24 hours, subject to slot availability.
Current waiting times for all examinations are published on our Waiting times page and on the national portal cakalnedobe.ezdrav.si.
When do examinations take place? Do you perform MRI at weekends?
We perform MRI examinations every day of the week, including Saturdays and Sundays, during our regular practice hours. X-ray imaging is performed twice a week; ultrasound diagnostics and ultrasound-guided procedures are by prior arrangement.
The full schedule is published on the Contact page.
How long does an examination take?
An MRI examination takes from 15 minutes to one hour, depending on the body part — for example, MRI of the head about 30 minutes, MRI of the spine and joints 15–30 minutes; contrast agent extends the time by about 15 minutes. MR enterography takes about 2 hours including preparation, MR urography about 1.5 hours.
X-ray imaging takes about 5–10 minutes, an ultrasound examination about 15 minutes, and ultrasound-guided procedures around 15–30 minutes. MRI, X-ray and ultrasound examinations are painless; ultrasound-guided procedures are performed under local anaesthesia with thin needles, so pain is usually minimal.
Self-pay services
Can I have an examination as a self-pay patient, without a referral?
Yes, examinations and consultations are also available on a self-pay basis, and no referral is needed — simply choose "Self-pay" in the online booking form, or book by telephone or email. Ultrasound examinations and ultrasound-guided procedures are performed exclusively as self-pay services. The ultrasound price list is published on our website.
Self-pay slots at the Radiology Clinic: Monday to Friday 7:00–8:00 and 20:00–21:00, Saturdays 18:00–20:00 and Sundays 8:00–10:00; at the Thyroid Clinic Wednesday to Friday 7:00–8:00. To book, call 02 23 53 552 or 02 23 53 553 or write to mr@mdt.si; for the Thyroid Clinic call 02 23 53 555 or write to scitnica@mdt.si.
