X-ray imaging (X-ray)

X-ray imaging (X-ray)

X-ray is the fundamental radiological examination for detecting bone disease or injury. It uses low doses of ionising (X-ray) radiation. An image of a particular part of the body is formed based on how the X-ray beams are attenuated as they pass through the body's different tissues. The examination is usually performed in two projections at right angles to each other. In certain cases, specific projections or functional imaging may also be used.

The examination is well suited to imaging bones, whereas soft tissues (muscles, tendons, intra-articular structures) are poorly visualised.

Do I need to prepare for the examination?

No special preparation is needed for an X-ray examination.

If you are pregnant or there is a possibility that you may be, you must inform the staff without fail, as in that case the appropriateness of the examination needs to be weighed against the potential harmful effect of X-rays on the foetus.

We recommend that before the examination you remove any metal objects (jewellery, glasses, piercings, etc.) from the area being imaged. During the examination, you will also be asked to remove clothing from that area.

You lie down on the X-ray table. The radiographer positions you appropriately for the area being imaged and, if necessary, supports the part of the body being examined so that it is held as still as possible. For the best image quality, it is important that you do not move during the procedure. The X-ray tube is then positioned over the area being examined and the image is taken.

The examination takes around 5–10 minutes. X-ray imaging is painless.
